The Bellevue Club project is an expansion and renovation that provided space for fitness amenities, an expanded library, converted sport courts and exterior site enhancements.
The design for the 3-story, 15,000 SF expansion needed to meet the changing functional requirements of this 30 year old fitness facility, complement the existing architecture, and maintain a quality and scale compatible with the adjacent single-family residential neighborhood. Influenced by Asian-inspired northwest architecture, the design achieved these goals through the use of a combination of elements including sloped roofs with large overhangs, cedar siding, stucco finish, and a horizontal window mullion pattern.
Situated between the facility’s exterior swimming pool to the north, and exterior tennis courts to the south, occupants of the expansion are exposed to stunning views. A secluded Zen garden, water feature, and Asian inspired landscaping enhance the immediate surroundings. Natural light flows into the three levels of exercise studios from all directions, including diffused daylight through translucent wall panel systems and skylights. A southern exposed, stairwell/atrium brings natural light to the core of the space through a three story curtain wall system.
Project challenges included integrating the new steel moment frame structure with the existing concrete structure. The transition between new and existing needed to occur with expansive openings while maintaining a seismic joint and a 3-hour fire separation.
In addition to the expansion, over 10,000 SF of the existing facility was remodeled. Exercise studios were refurbished, racquetball courts were converted to multi-purpose rooms and offices, and the library was expanded with enhanced views and access to the exterior facilities.
